[English] Robin Hardy (Robin St. Clair Rimington Hardy, October 2, 1929 – July 1, 2016) was a British director, writer, and novelist, remembered above all for a single landmark film — The Wicker Man (1973), one of the most acclaimed British films ever made and the cornerstone of the folk-horror genre. Educated in England and in Paris, Hardy began his career not in cinema but in advertising, working as one of the real-life “mad men” of the New York advertising world. He moved into directing in the 1960s, making television dramas — including for the cultural anthology series Esso World Theatre — as well as commercials and educational films, in Canada and the United States, before returning to London, where he collaborated on various projects with the playwright Anthony Shaffer.

Hardy made his feature directorial debut with The Wicker Man (1973), from a screenplay by Shaffer, starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee. Conceived as a horror film built around ancient paganism rather than gothic monsters, it was mishandled on release — cut down by the studio and sent out on the bottom of a double bill — and initially overlooked. A singular vision. Hardy’s reputation rests overwhelmingly on one film, but that film is so distinctive that it defined a genre: an eerie, controlled fusion of mystery, horror, folk music, and dark irony, in which dread accumulates through daylight and song rather than shadow and shock.
