[English] Roger Allers (Roger Charles Allers, June 29, 1949 – January 17, 2026) was an American filmmaker, story artist, animator, and playwright, best known for co-directing Disney’s The Lion King (1994) and for his central role in shaping the studio’s “Renaissance” era as a story man. Born in Rye, New York, and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, he fell in love with animation at age five after seeing Disney’s Peter Pan, and studied fine arts at Arizona State University. He spent two decades honing his craft across the international animation industry — working in the United States and Canada (including on Nelvana’s Rock & Rule), and living for two years in Tokyo, where he served as an animation director overseeing Japanese artists on Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland.

Joining Disney in the mid-1980s as a storyboard artist, Allers became one of the key creative forces behind the Disney Renaissance. He worked as a story artist on The Little Mermaid (1989) — helping shape iconic sequences and songs — and The Rescuers Down Under, served as Head of Story on Oliver & Company and Beauty and the Beast (1991), and contributed story to Aladdin (1992).

Allers reached the pinnacle of his career co-directing The Lion King (1994) with Rob Minkoff — the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of its time and a defining classic of the era. He went on to receive a Tony Award nomination, with co-author Irene Mecchi, for adapting the film into the celebrated Broadway musical.
