The Emperor in August is a tense, meticulously reconstructed historical drama chronicling the fateful final days before Japan’s surrender in the Second World War. In late July 1945, with the war going catastrophically against Japan, the Allied powers issue the Potsdam Declaration demanding unconditional surrender. As the government hesitates over its response, atomic bombs devastate Hiroshima and then Nagasaki, and the Soviet Union declares war. Within the halls of power, a fierce struggle unfolds: the newly appointed Prime Minister Kantarō Suzuki (Tsutomu Yamazaki) works cautiously to guide the nation toward peace, while Army Minister Korechika Anami (Kōji Yakusho) is torn between his duty to a military that demands a fight to the last and his understanding of the catastrophe ahead. Presiding over the deadlocked cabinet and the imperial conference is the Emperor (Masahiro Motoki), whose unprecedented “sacred decision” to accept surrender will change the course of the nation. But even as the decision is made, a group of young army officers, unable to accept defeat, sets in motion a desperate coup to seize the Emperor’s recorded surrender broadcast and prolong the war. Directed by Masato Harada and adapted from Kazutoshi Hando’s landmark nonfiction, the film unfolds across the twenty-four hours that determined Japan’s fate.

『日本のいちばん長い日』は、第二次世界大戦における日本の降伏へと至る、運命の最後の日々を、緻密に再構成した緊迫の歴史ドラマです。1945年7月末、戦局が絶望的に悪化するなか、連合国は日本に無条件降伏を迫るポツダム宣言を発します。日本政府がその返答を先送りにするあいだに、広島、そして長崎に原子爆弾が投下され、ソ連が対日参戦します。権力の中枢では、激しいせめぎ合いが繰り広げられていました。新たに就任した鈴木貫太郎首相（山﨑努）は、国を和平へと導くべく慎重に事を進めます。一方、陸軍大臣・阿南惟幾（役所広司）は、最後まで戦うことを求める軍に対する務めと、この先に待つ破局への理解とのあいだで、引き裂かれていました。膠着した閣議と御前会議に臨むのは、昭和天皇（本木雅弘）。降伏を受け入れるというその前例なき「聖断」が、国の行く末を変えることになります。しかし、その決定が下されてもなお、敗戦を受け入れられない一部の青年将校たちは、天皇の録音された終戦の放送（玉音盤）を奪い、戦争を継続させようと、決死のクーデターを起こそうとします。原田眞人が監督し、半藤一利の記念碑的なノンフィクションを映画化した本作は、日本の運命を決した24時間を描き出します。

The film is based on Kazutoshi Hando’s acclaimed nonfiction work Japan’s Longest Day, first published in 1965 (under the name Ōya Sōichi) and revised as a definitive edition under Hando’s own name in 1995. The same book had previously been adapted into a celebrated 1967 film directed by Kihachi Okamoto; the 2015 version, written and directed by Masato Harada (Climbers’ High, Chronicle of My Mother), is a new interpretation rather than a remake of the earlier film. Harada’s screenplay broadens the story’s scope, beginning months earlier with the formation of the Suzuki cabinet and giving fuller weight to the Emperor and to Army Minister Anami as central human figures. The production paid careful attention to historical detail in recreating the imperial conferences and the attempted coup — the Kyūjō incident — of the night of August 14–15, 1945.
