August 31, 1997. Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in a car crash in Paris. The British public begins to grieve publicly, collectively, and with an intensity that surprises everyone, including the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) retreats to Balmoral with her family — a private family coping with a private death, in the manner they have always coped: with stoicism, with distance, with silence. The public sees this as coldness. The crisis deepens. Tony Blair (Michael Sheen), newly elected and acutely sensitive to the national mood, becomes the unlikely intermediary between the monarchy and the people it has suddenly lost touch with. The Queen is not a film about Diana. It is a film about Elizabeth II — about the cost of a lifetime of duty, about the gap between institutional dignity and human feeling, and about the week when one woman had to decide, at seventy-one, whether everything she had stood for was still worth standing for. Helen Mirren’s performance is one of the great achievements in the history of the biopic: she does not impersonate the Queen; she inhabits her.
