Zodiac is based on the non-fiction books Zodiac (1986) and Zodiac Unmasked (2002) by Robert Graysmith, the former Chronicle cartoonist who became personally consumed by the real case. Director David Fincher — himself raised in the Bay Area during the period the Zodiac was active — pursued exhaustive accuracy, reinterviewing witnesses and surviving investigators and cross-checking case records, and reshot many scenes numerous times in his signature perfectionist style. The film was among the first major features shot largely on the digital Thomson Viper FilmStream camera, with traditional high-speed film reserved for certain sequences. The real Zodiac case has never been officially solved; the film treats prime suspect Arthur Leigh Allen with the same evidentiary caution as the source books, presenting suspicion without asserting certainty.
