Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American economics professor in New York, who agrees to travel to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) to attend his best friend’s wedding and meet his family for the first time. What Rachel doesn’t know is that Nick belongs to one of the wealthiest and most prominent families in Asia — and that, to much of Singapore’s elite, he is one of the country’s most eligible bachelors. Thrust into a dazzling world of private jets, palatial estates, and lavish parties, Rachel finds herself sized up by scheming socialites and, above all, by Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), who doubts that an ambitious American outsider could ever be worthy of her son or understand the family’s values. As Rachel navigates old money, sharp-edged snobbery, and a clash between individual desire and family duty, she must decide how much of herself she is willing to hold onto. Directed by Jon M. The film is based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 bestselling novel Crazy Rich Asians, the first in a trilogy. It was celebrated as the first Hollywood studio film in twenty-five years — since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club — to feature a majority-Asian cast, and the filmmakers reportedly turned down a lucrative Netflix offer in order to secure a theatrical release and prove the story’s mainstream appeal. Filming took place in 2017 in Singapore, Malaysia, and New York, showcasing landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands.
