Introduction

A Modern Romantic Comedy Depicting Love and Understanding Within Diversity

July 21 is Racial Harmony Day in Singapore, which promotes racial and ethnic harmony within the nation. This observance was established by the Ministry of Education from 1997 as a day to reaffirm, without forgetting the racial riots that broke out on July 21, 1964, the importance of a society in which diverse peoples coexist. Its aim is for us to recognize the importance of people of different cultural backgrounds building a harmonious society through mutual understanding and respect, and various cultural-exchange activities are held, centered on schools and grassroots organizations.

For this special day, we strongly recommend Jon M. Chu’s 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians. A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan, it is a romantic comedy set in Singapore that depicts, through a cross-cultural romance, family bonds, cultural identity, and true love.

Centered on the international romance between Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, and Nick Young, played by Henry Golding, it beautifully depicts themes deeply connected to the ideals of Racial Harmony Day: the coexistence of people of diverse cultural backgrounds, the harmony between family tradition and individual choice, and the building of human relationships that transcend economic disparity. The rich multicultural society of Singapore re-created through Jon M. Chu’s refined direction, and the universal values regarding family and love, make for a moving work that leaves on viewers a deep impression of the importance and the beauty of embracing diversity.

Synopsis: Rachel Chu, an Asian-American economics professor at New York University, is invited by her boyfriend Nick Young to travel to Singapore to attend the wedding of his best friend. Only on the flight does she learn that Nick’s family is extraordinarily wealthy — in effect, Singaporean royalty. Arriving to a world of dazzling opulence, Rachel must win over Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor, who considers her American values ill-suited to the family, while navigating the envy, prejudice, and hidden kindnesses of the world Nick was born into. As tradition and individual choice collide, Rachel must decide who she is willing to be — and whether love can bridge the gap between two ways of living.

Background Knowledge

The Historical Background of Singapore and the Formation of Its Multi-Ethnic Society

To understand Crazy Rich Asians, it is important to know Singapore’s complex history. When Britain colonized Singapore in 1819, its free-trade-port policy drew a great influx of immigrants from China, India, and the Malay Peninsula. Chinese immigrants in particular succeeded in commerce and finance, becoming the majority of the population (currently 74%) throughout the colonial period.

Amid the worldwide flow of decolonization after the Second World War, Singapore too walked the path toward independence; but a small island of about 720 km² (roughly the size of Tokyo’s 23 wards) with no natural resources was judged unable to stand as a nation on its own. For that reason, in 1963 it formed the Federation of Malaysia together with the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak, and gained independence within it.

However, serious conflict arose over policies favoring Malays and over the rights of the Chinese population, and on July 21, 1964, racial riots resulted in a situation where 22 people died. Owing to this conflict, only two years later, in 1965, Singapore was forced to separate and become independent from Malaysia.

After independence, the Lee Kuan Yew government, led by the Chinese majority, promoted a deliberate policy of multi-ethnic coexistence to prevent a recurrence of ethnic conflict. Singapore today is composed of 74% Chinese, 13% Malay, 9% Indian, and 4% other, and maintains a policy of using English as a common language while respecting the culture and religion of each ethnic group.

The Validity of the Film’s Depiction of the Chinese Community

There is criticism of the work for mainly depicting a wealthy Chinese family, but this has a historical basis. Since the colonial period, the Chinese community has carried the center of commerce and finance and still occupies a leading position in the business world today. Moreover, the author Kevin Kwan himself comes from a long-established Chinese family spanning generations, and provides depictions based on real experience.

The families depicted in the film are modeled on real Chinese business dynasties — the Kuok family (the Shangri-La hotel chain), the Kwee family (Pontiac Land Group), and the Wee family (United Overseas Bank), among others — making it a work that, while fiction, reflects the reality of Singaporean society.

The Historical Significance of Asian-American Representation

Crazy Rich Asians is an extremely important work in film history as the first contemporary drama with an Asian-American lead produced by a major Hollywood studio in 25 years. Since The Joy Luck Club in 1993, no big-budget romantic comedy with Asian actors in leading roles had been made, and this work’s success opened the way for subsequent Asian works.

The process of adaptation also tells of the difficulty of Asian representation in Hollywood. After the novel’s publication in 2013, one of the early producers proposed “whitewashing” the heroine Rachel by casting a white actress, so the author Kevin Kwan optioned the film rights for just one dollar in exchange for a continuing voice in creation and development.

Producer Nina Jacobson deliberately raised funds outside the studio system to make an all-Asian cast possible. Noting the problems of the conventional Hollywood system, she said that obtaining development money is an easy way to keep a film from ever being made. In 2014, the Asian film-investment group Ivanhoe Pictures joined, saying that, contrary to Hollywood’s anxiety of “is it all right that everyone is Asian?”, they were convinced that “that is exactly why it will work.”

Director Jon M. Chu was also hired after making a visual presentation drawing on his experience as a first-generation Asian American, and the screenplay was handled jointly by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. Lim, who is from Malaysia, took on the role of ensuring the cultural detail and authenticity of the Asian material.

The film’s success (worldwide box-office receipts of about 240 million dollars) proved that a film with diversity can succeed commercially as well, and it had a great influence on subsequent works such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

What Makes It Exceptional

Gorgeous Yet Cultural Visual Beauty

The visual direction by Jon M. Chu makes the most of Singapore’s beauty while at the same time splendidly expressing its character as a multicultural city. Filming used the Panasonic VariCam PURE camera fitted with special anamorphic lenses, and the wider-than-usual aspect ratio (2.35:1) depicts, with cinematic beauty, the grandeur of the opulent wedding venue and the panoramic urban landscape of Singapore.

Modern landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay, and traditional streetscapes such as Chinatown and Little India, are depicted in harmony. In the wedding scenes, a traditional Chinese ceremony and a modern party are combined, beautifully expressing the fusion of cultural inheritance and modernity.

Overwhelming Costume Design and Fashion

Another of the film’s strengths is the costume design and fashion direction by Mary Vogt. Costumes from the world’s foremost fashion brands — Ralph Lauren, Elie Saab, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and Christian Dior — were used, so much so that many brands eagerly sought to participate in the film.

The contrast of “old money vs. new money” is cleverly expressed through costume as well; referring to old family photographs provided by author Kevin Kwan, Singapore’s old families were depicted as “very refined, very elegant,” while the newly wealthy Goh family was drawn in a style that “just wants to wave it around and show it off.”

Especially notable is the insistence that all the accessories be genuine. The “Paul Newman” Rolex Daytona that Astrid gives, the emerald engagement ring provided by Michelle Yeoh from her own jewelry collection, the orchid brooch borrowed from Carnet — the staging was so authentic that guards were hired to protect the jewelry. For the wedding-reception extras, members of the local Peranakan association were engaged, and by having each wear vintage formalwear, a true local flavor was created.

The Universal Theme of Family Love

That the universal theme of love and responsibility toward family is deeply depicted, transcending cultural differences, is also a great strength of the work. The hardships of Rachel’s mother as an immigrant, Eleanor’s heart as a mother thinking of her son, Nick’s sense of responsibility toward his family — a family love common to us as human beings, however different the cultures, is movingly depicted.

Through this universality, the work becomes one with which viewers of any cultural background can empathize, and the importance of embracing diversity comes across naturally.
