The film is based on Harper Lee’s 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which won the Pulitzer Prize and became a cornerstone of modern American literature. Producer Alan J. Pakula acquired the film rights, teaming with director Robert Mulligan and hiring playwright Horton Foote to adapt it. The picture marked the film debut of Robert Duvall, who played the reclusive Boo Radley, and of the young Mary Badham as Scout — at age 10, she became one of the youngest actresses ever nominated for an Academy Award at the time. Gregory Peck reportedly regarded Atticus Finch as his favorite role, and formed a lasting friendship with author Harper Lee, who gave him her own father’s pocket watch.
