Life of Pi tells the extraordinary story of Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel (Suraj Sharma), a young man from Pondicherry, India, whose father runs a local zoo. Curious and spiritually searching, the teenage Pi embraces several religions at once, seeking to understand God and the world. When his family decides to sell the zoo and emigrate to Canada, they board a Japanese freighter along with their animals — but a terrible storm sinks the ship, and Pi survives as the sole human aboard a small lifeboat. He is not, however, alone: sharing the boat is a magnificent and fearsome Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. What follows is an epic, harrowing, and wondrous 227-day ordeal adrift on the vast Pacific Ocean, as boy and tiger forge a fragile, uneasy coexistence in a struggle for survival that tests Pi’s faith, ingenuity, and will to live. Adapted from Yann Martel’s 2001 Booker Prize–winning novel, Life of Pi had long been considered nearly impossible to film, passing through several directors — including M. Night Shyamalan — before Ang Lee took on the project. Lee chose to shoot the film natively in 3D, viewing the format as essential to conveying the transparency and depth of water, and built a massive self-generating wave tank in Taichung, Taiwan, to film the ocean sequences under controlled conditions. The tiger Richard Parker was brought to life primarily through cutting-edge visual effects by the Rhythm & Hues team, with a small amount of real-tiger reference footage; for the sustained lifeboat scenes, lead actor Suraj Sharma — cast as a newcomer with no prior film experience — largely performed opposite an animatronic stand-in or empty space. The film became one of the year’s biggest global hits and earned Ang Lee his second Academy Award for Best Director.
