The White Helmets is a moving, harrowing, and ultimately inspiring short documentary about ordinary people who choose to run toward danger to save the lives of others. Set in Aleppo, Syria, and in southern Turkey in early 2016, at the height of the Syrian Civil War, the film follows three volunteer rescue workers of the Syria Civil Defence — the group known around the world as the “White Helmets.” As bombs fall on their besieged city, these men — a former builder, a tailor, a onetime fighter — rush into the smoke and rubble of freshly struck buildings to dig survivors, often children, out of the ruins with their bare hands. Filmed both amid the devastation of Aleppo and during a training course in Turkey, the documentary captures the almost unimaginable danger of their work, the staggering toll it takes, and the constant fear for their own families’ safety — while also honoring the extraordinary courage and humanity that drives them. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Joanna Natasegara — the Oscar-nominated team behind Virunga — The White Helmets is a humbling portrait of the resilience of the human spirit amid catastrophe, and of the volunteers who live by the creed that to save one life is to save all of humanity.

The White Helmets was directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Joanna Natasegara, reuniting the team whose feature Virunga (2014) had been nominated for an Academy Award. Von Einsiedel and Natasegara first learned of the Syria Civil Defence through grainy rescue footage emerging from the war. Because the filmmakers could not safely embed in Aleppo themselves for the most dangerous sequences, much of the on-the-ground footage was filmed by Syrian cinematographers living through the conflict, including Khaled Khateeb; other portions were shot during a training program the volunteers attended in southern Turkey. Released by Netflix in September 2016, the 40-minute film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. In a widely reported development, Khateeb was unable to travel to the ceremony in Los Angeles.
