The Wicker Man is a landmark British folk-horror film — often called the founding work of the entire genre — a slow-burning, deeply unsettling mystery about faith, ritual, and the collision of two irreconcilable worlds. Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), a devout and rather austere Christian police officer from the mainland, flies to the remote Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate an anonymous letter reporting a missing young girl, Rowan Morrison. From the moment he arrives, the islanders are evasive and strange: some deny the girl ever existed, and Howie is scandalized to discover that this outwardly idyllic community, presided over by the urbane Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee), has abandoned Christianity entirely and returned to a pagan, pre-Christian religion of nature worship, fertility rites, and old Celtic ritual. As the pious sergeant digs deeper — increasingly appalled by the island’s open sensuality and rituals — his search for Rowan draws him toward the island’s May Day celebration, and toward a horrifying revelation about why he was really brought to Summerisle. Directed by Robin Hardy and written by Anthony Shaffer, with an unforgettable folk-song score by Paul Giovanni, The Wicker Man builds with eerie calm to one of the most shocking and iconic endings in the history of horror.

Though its release in 1973 was troubled — cut down by its distributor and initially dismissed — The Wicker Man steadily grew into one of the most acclaimed and influential cult films ever made, and is now widely regarded as a masterpiece and the cornerstone of the “folk horror” genre. Critics praise its uncanny atmosphere, its unusual fusion of mystery, horror, folk musical, and dark comedy, its intelligent screenplay, and the extraordinary tension between its two leads — Edward Woodward’s rigid, righteous Howie and Christopher Lee’s charming, cultured Lord Summerisle. Lee himself considered it the best film he ever made, and Woodward called Howie the finest role of his career. The film’s slow accumulation of dread and its shattering climax have made it a touchstone for later filmmakers; its influence is felt in a lineage of folk-horror works, up to and including Ari Aster’s Midsummer. The Wicker Man was conceived by star Christopher Lee — then eager to escape his typecasting as Dracula in Hammer horror films — together with screenwriter Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth) and producer Peter Snell. Shaffer’s screenplay was inspired by David Pinner’s 1967 novel Ritual, and the filmmakers deliberately set out to make a horror film unlike the gothic Hammer style — one built around “the old religion” and ancient ritual. Christopher Lee reportedly worked on the film for no fee, so committed was he to the project. Shot largely in Scotland, the film is celebrated for its haunting use of traditional and original folk songs, woven throughout the story. Famously, the film suffered from post-production cuts and a tangled distribution history, resulting in several different versions of varying lengths circulating over the years (including later “extended” and 2013 “Final Cut” versions). In Japan, the film did not receive its theatrical premiere until March 21, 1998 — some twenty-five years after its British release.
