A Street Cat Named Bob is a heartwarming, fact-based drama about an unlikely friendship that changed a life. James Bowen (Luke Treadaway) is a young busker living hand-to-mouth on the streets of London — a struggling musician working to overcome addiction, estranged from his family, and barely holding on. With the support of a caring drugs-recovery worker, Val (Joanne Froggatt), and a kind neighbor, Betty (Ruta Gedmintas), James is given a shot at sheltered accommodation. It is there that he discovers an injured ginger tomcat curled up in the hallway. Though the last thing he needs is a pet, James can’t turn the cat away — he nurses him back to health and names him Bob. To his surprise, Bob refuses to leave his side, riding on his shoulders through the streets and sitting beside him as he busks, and the pair become an unlikely local sensation. The film is based on the memoirs of James Bowen, whose books about his life with Bob — beginning with A Street Cat Named Bob (2012) — sold more than ten million copies worldwide. The story’s origins trace to Bowen’s time selling the street newspaper The Big Issue in London. In a rare and much-noted choice, the real Bob plays himself in the majority of the film’s scenes; director Roger Spottiswoode found that the actual Bob was uniquely comfortable amid the bustle of locations like Covent Garden, and used him wherever possible, supported by a team of trained “stand-in” cats. Author James Bowen himself makes a cameo appearance. The film was shot largely on the real London locations where the events took place. A Christmas-themed sequel, A Christmas Gift from Bob, followed in 2020.
