The Hope and Renewal a Single Stray Cat Taught, and the Reality That Followed After
August 8 is “International Cat Day.”
This commemorative day was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Its purpose is to raise interest in the welfare and protection of cats around the world and to promote responsible care. From 2020, the British cat-welfare specialist organization International Cat Care has taken over its operation. That organization, an institution with a history dating to its founding in 1958, has long worked against cruelty toward and misunderstanding of cats.
The world is estimated to have about 600 million cats, of which roughly half are said to be cats without owners. The reason August was chosen is partly that it falls in the season when cats’ breeding activity becomes active in the Northern Hemisphere, making it suitable for urging the need for population management through neutering.
As the film to watch on this day, we recommend Roger Spottiswoode’s 2016 British film A Street Cat Named Bob.
This work is based on the true story of a street musician suffering from heroin addiction who rebuilds his life through an encounter with a single stray cat. It is the story of James Bowen, played by Luke Treadaway, and the ginger tabby Bob.
In this article, however, we touch not only on the range the film depicts but also on what happened afterward. The story has a continuation, and it was not necessarily a happy one. Even so — or perhaps for that very reason — what this work showed has meaning.

Background Knowledge
International Cat Day and the Reality of Stray Cats
International Cat Day is not a day merely for doting on cats. It is a day for calling for improvement in cat welfare and for efforts on the problem of cats without owners.
Of the estimated 600 million cats, about half have no owner. Many end short lives in harsh conditions.
Widely practiced as a countermeasure is TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return: capture, sterilize, and return to the original place). It has taken hold as a method that prevents unlimited breeding while respecting the lives of the cats already there.
Bob, depicted in the film, was precisely one of these “cats without owners.” That one of the first things James did was to have him neutered also has meaning when seen in this context.
Britain’s Homelessness Problem and the Big Issue
In Britain, homelessness is a serious social issue. With the surge in housing costs, the number of people unable to secure housing even while working has increased, and it is complexly entangled with problems of drug and alcohol dependence and mental health.
The Big Issue magazine was first published in London in 1991. Under the philosophy of “a hand up, not a handout,” it is a system whereby people who are homeless or in unstable housing sell it on the street, and part of the sale price becomes the seller’s income. It now operates in countries around the world.
That James moved from busking to magazine selling was because this system existed. Where he sold was around Angel station in North London.
James and Bob as a True Story
James Bowen was born in 1979. In 2007, in London, he found Bob, who had been injured and left behind. With the help of the animal charity Blue Cross, he nursed Bob back to health.
The two continued busking and selling The Big Issue around Angel station. The sight of Bob, wrapped in a scarf and riding on James’s shoulder, became a local landmark.
Published in 2012, A Street Cat Named Bob became an international bestseller, translated into more than 30 languages. Sequels were published one after another, and this work was released in 2016, with the sequel A Gift from Bob released in 2020.
Bowen has spoken of his own recovery thus: “I think it comes down to this little man. He came to me asking for help. He needed me more than he was hurting his own body. Now I get up every morning for him.”
Bob’s Death
There is an event that follows, not depicted in the film.
In his later years Bob became an indoor cat, and would walk in the neighborhood park wearing a harness. Bowen also built a dedicated catio (an enclosure for cats) so that he could access the garden safely.
At around 11 p.m. on the night of June 13, 2020, being fed in the kitchen of the home in Surrey was the last time Bob was seen. He had gotten outside through a skylight that had inadvertently been left open.
Two days later, on June 15, Bob was found dead at the roadside about half a mile from home. The cause of death was a hematoma from a collision with a car. The driver has not been identified. His estimated age is put at between 14 and 16.
When the news spread, messages of mourning from around the world were sent to The Big Issue. On July 15, 2021, a life-size bronze statue was erected at Islington Green. It was made by the sculptor Tanya Russell. It was realized through more than 100,000 donations.
The statue was placed across from Waterstones, the bookshop where Bowen wrote his first book. On the bench of the pedestal, his words are engraved.
“He is my companion, my best friend, my teacher, and my soulmate. And he will go on being so, always.”
At the unveiling Bowen said: “If those who visit Bob’s statue, or who happen to pass by, remember even a little that everyone has a chance to start over, and that no one is alone.”
What Makes It Exceptional
Not Making It a One-Sided Story of Rescue
The strength of this work is that it did not take the simple structure of “a human saving an animal.”
That James helped Bob is a fact. But at the same time, Bob helped James. He increased his income, gave him a reason to go out, imposed a regular life on him, and, during the week of withdrawal symptoms, stayed by his side.
The film carefully depicts this two-way nature. Bob is not an adorable mascot but a presence that makes James’s life hold together.
Not Treating Social Problems Preachily
Heavy themes such as drug dependence, homelessness, and the difficulty of social reintegration, this work depicts without being heavy-handed.
The difficulties James faces are realistic. The ban on busking, the turf problems of magazine selling, the gaze directed at a former addict. These are institutional and social barriers that cannot be crossed by individual will alone.
The film does not make his recovery a story of “if you try hard, you’ll be rewarded.” Only with institutional support — the presence of the support worker Val, the provision of housing, methadone treatment — did he gain a foothold to get back on his feet.
Bob Himself Appearing
The actual Bob appears in many scenes of the film (other cats were also used in scenes of difficult movement).
There is a naturalness deriving from his long-standing relationship with James Bowen himself, which cannot be produced by a trained animal actor. Bowen himself also made a cameo appearance as one of the crowd.
The reason the interaction between Luke Treadaway and Bob looks natural is that Bob was truly accustomed to this environment.

本作は、ヘロイン依存に苦しむストリートミュージシャンが、一匹の野良猫との出会いによって人生を立て直していく実話をもとにしています。ルーク・トレッダウェイ演じるジェームズ・ボーエンと、茶トラ猫ボブの物語です。
ただし本記事では、映画が描いた範囲だけでなく、その後に起きたことにも触れます。物語には続きがあり、それは必ずしも幸福なものではありませんでした。それでも、あるいはだからこそ、この作品が示したものには意味があります。

世界猫の日と、野良猫の現実
世界猫の日は、猫を愛でるだけの日ではありません。猫の福祉向上と、飼い主のいない猫の問題への取り組みを訴える日です。
推定6億匹の猫のうち、約半数には飼い主がいません。多くは厳しい環境で短い生涯を終えます。
対策として広く行われているのがTNR（Trap-Neuter-Return：捕獲・不妊手術・元の場所に戻す）です。無制限な繁殖を防ぎながら、既にいる猫の生を尊重する手法として定着してきました。
映画で描かれるボブは、まさにこの「飼い主のいない猫」の一匹でした。ジェームズがした最初のことの一つが、彼に去勢手術を受けさせることだったのも、この文脈で見ると意味があります。
イギリスのホームレス問題とビッグイシュー
イギリスでは、ホームレス問題が深刻な社会課題です。住宅費の高騰により、働いていても住居を確保できない人が増えており、薬物・アルコール依存や精神的健康の問題とも複雑に絡み合っています。
『ビッグイシュー』誌は、1991年にロンドンで創刊されました。「施しではなく仕事を」という理念のもと、ホームレスや住居不安定な状態にある人が路上で販売し、販売価格の一部が販売者の収入になる仕組みです。現在は世界各国に展開しています。
ジェームズがバスキングから雑誌販売に移ったのは、この制度があったからでした。彼が販売していたのは、北ロンドンのエンジェル駅周辺です。
実話としてのジェームズとボブ
ジェームズ・ボーエンは1979年生まれ。2007年、ロンドンで負傷して置き去りにされていたボブを見つけました。動物慈善団体ブルー・クロスの助けを借りて、ボブを回復させます。
二人はエンジェル駅周辺で、バスキングと『ビッグイシュー』販売を続けました。マフラーを巻いたボブを肩に乗せた姿は、地域の名物となります。
2012年に出版された『A Street Cat Named Bob』は国際的なベストセラーとなり、30以上の言語に翻訳されました。続編も次々に出版され、2016年に本作が、2020年には続編『ボブという名の猫2 幸せのギフト』が公開されています。
ボーエンは自らの回復について、こう語っています。「これは、この小さな男に尽きると思う。彼は助けを求めてやってきた。彼が自分の体を痛めつけることよりも、私を必要としていた。今は彼のために毎朝起きている」
ボブの死
映画では描かれない、その後の出来事があります。
晩年のボブは室内飼いとなり、ハーネスを着けて近所の公園を散歩していました。ボーエンは庭に安全にアクセスできるよう、専用のキャティオ（猫用の囲い）も作っています。
2020年6月13日の夜11時頃、サリー州の自宅のキッチンで食事を与えられたのが、ボブが最後に目撃された姿でした。彼は、うっかり開いたままになっていた天窓から外に出てしまったのです。
2日後の6月15日、自宅から約半マイル離れた路傍で、ボブは遺体で発見されました。死因は車との衝突による血腫でした。運転手は特定されていません。推定年齢は14歳から16歳の間とされています。
訃報が伝わると、『ビッグイシュー』誌には世界中から追悼のメッセージが寄せられました。2021年7月15日、イズリントン・グリーンに実物大のブロンズ像が建てられます。制作は彫刻家タニヤ・ラッセル。10万件を超える寄付によって実現しました。
像が置かれたのは、ボーエンが最初の本を書いた書店ウォーターストーンズの向かいです。台座のベンチには、彼の言葉が刻まれています。
「彼は私の伴侶であり、親友であり、師であり、魂の片割れだ。そしてこれからも、ずっとそうあり続ける」
除幕式でボーエンはこう述べました。「ボブの像を訪れる人、あるいは通りかかる人が、誰にでもやり直す機会があること、そして誰も一人ではないことを、少しでも思い出してくれたら」
優れている点
一方的な救済物語にしていないこと
本作の優れた点は、「人間が動物を救う」という単純な構図を取らなかったことです。
ジェームズがボブを助けたのは事実です。しかし同時に、ボブがジェームズを助けました。収入を増やし、外出する理由を与え、規則正しい生活を強い、そして離脱症状の一週間、そばにいました。
映画は、この双方向性を丁寧に描きます。ボブは愛らしいマスコットではなく、ジェームズの生活を成り立たせる存在です。
社会問題を説教的に扱わないこと
薬物依存、ホームレス、社会復帰の困難といった重いテーマを、本作は押しつけがましくなく描いています。
ジェームズが直面する困難は現実的です。バスキングの禁止処分、雑誌販売の縄張り問題、元依存者への視線。これらは制度的・社会的な障壁であり、個人の意志だけでは越えられません。
映画は、彼の回復を「頑張れば報われる」という物語にしていません。支援ワーカーのヴァルの存在、住宅の提供、メサドン治療といった制度的支援があって初めて、彼は立ち直る足場を得ました。
ボブ本人の出演
映画には、実際のボブが多くの場面で出演しています（動きの難しい場面では他の猫も使われています）。
訓練された動物俳優では出せない、ジェームズ・ボーエン本人との長年の関係に由来する自然さがあります。ボーエン自身も、群衆の一人としてカメオ出演しました。
ルーク・トレッダウェイとボブの相互作用が自然に見えるのは、ボブが本当にこの環境に慣れていたからです。
