[English] Roger Spottiswoode (John Roger Spottiswoode, b. January 5, 1945, Ottawa) is a Canadian-British director, editor, and screenwriter whose long and versatile career spans studio blockbusters, socially conscious dramas, comedies, and acclaimed television. The son of British film theoretician Raymond Spottiswoode, he was raised in Britain and entered the film industry in the 1960s as a trainee editor, apprenticing under editor John Bloom. In the early 1970s he worked as an editor for director Sam Peckinpah, cutting films including Straw Dogs (1971) and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973).

Encouraged by director Walter Hill to try writing, Spottiswoode was part of the screenwriting team on the hit action-comedy 48 Hrs. (1982) before turning to directing. His breakthrough came with Under Fire (1983), a serious, well-regarded drama about photojournalists caught up in the Nicaraguan revolution. Over the following years he demonstrated remarkable range, directing the comedy-drama The Best of Times (1986), the thriller Shoot to Kill (1988), the hugely popular buddy comedy Turner & Hooch (1989) with Tom Hanks, and the Vietnam-era action film Air America (1990).

In the 1990s Spottiswoode did some of his most acclaimed work on television, directing the HBO film And the Band Played On (1993), about the early years of the AIDS crisis, which earned him Emmy and Directors Guild of America nominations, and the docudrama Hiroshima (1995), for which he won a Canadian Gemini Award. He then took on one of the biggest assignments in cinema, directing the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) with Pierce Brosnan and Michelle Yeoh, followed by the Arnold Schwarzenegger science-fiction thriller The 6th Day (2000).
