[English] Frances McDormand (born Cynthia Ann Smith, June 23, 1957, Gibson City, Illinois) is an American actress and producer celebrated for her portrayals of resilient, unglamorous women, and regarded as one of the finest character actors of her generation. Adopted as an infant by a Disciples of Christ minister and his wife, she moved frequently through the Midwest before the family settled in Pennsylvania. She studied theater at Bethany College and earned an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, where she roomed with fellow actress Holly Hunter.
Through Hunter, McDormand met filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, who cast her in her film debut, the neo-noir Blood Simple (1984); she married Joel Coen that same year and would go on to appear in many of the brothers’ films, including Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and Burn After Reading. She earned her first Academy Award nomination for Mississippi Burning (1988), but her defining breakthrough came as pregnant Minnesota police chief Marge Gunderson in Fargo (1996), a performance that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Over the following decades McDormand built a body of acclaimed work — Almost Famous (2000) and North Country (2005) both brought Oscar nominations — while dissolving into her characters rather than courting stardom.
