[English] Wolfgang Becker (June 22, 1954 – December 12, 2024) was a German film director and screenwriter, best known internationally for the global hit Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) and celebrated as one of the key figures in the revitalization of German cinema around the turn of the millennium. Born in Hemer, in what was then West Germany, he studied German, History, and American Studies at the Free University of Berlin before training in filmmaking at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb).

Becker announced his talent early with his graduation film, Butterflies (Schmetterlinge, 1988), adapted from a short story by Ian McEwan, which won a Student Academy Award and the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. He followed it with Child’s Play (Kinderspiele, 1992). In 1994, together with his fellow directors Tom Tykwer and Dani Levy and producer Stefan Arndt, Becker co-founded the Berlin-based production company X Filme Creative Pool — an artistically ambitious, audience-minded venture that became a driving force in German cinema, producing works such as Tykwer’s Run Lola Run and, later, television series including Babylon Berlin.

Becker’s first feature for X Filme, Life Is All You Get (Das Leben ist eine Baustelle, 1997), premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and became his commercial breakout, winning several German Film Awards. But it was his next film, Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), that made him internationally famous. The bittersweet tragicomedy about a son concealing the fall of East Germany from his ailing socialist mother became one of the biggest German films of its era, swept the German and European film awards, and launched the international career of its young star, Daniel Brühl. A meticulous, deliberate filmmaker who worked slowly and only on material he fully believed in, Becker directed relatively few films: he contributed to the omnibus Germany 09 (2009) and reunited with Brühl for the art-world satire Me and Kaminski (2015). He had just completed principal photography on his final feature, The Hero of Friedrichstrasse Station, about a mass exodus from East Berlin, when he died in Berlin in December 2024 at the age of 70.

Big themes through ordinary lives. Becker had a gift for taking large historical and social subjects — German reunification above all — and telling them through intimate, humane, tragicomic family stories, balancing broad comedy with real emotional depth and a clear-eyed refusal of easy sentiment.

Craftsmanship and patience. Famously deliberate, Becker made films slowly and sparingly, waiting years for scripts he could commit to “one hundred per cent.” As a co-founder of X Filme, he also embodied a guiding ideal: distinctive, author-driven cinema made for a wide audience rather than a narrow art-house niche.
