In This Corner of the World is an acclaimed animated drama that views the Second World War not through battlefields or grand strategy, but through the small, tender textures of one woman’s everyday life. Suzu Urano is a gentle, absent-minded young woman who loves to draw, raised in the seaside district of Eba near Hiroshima. In 1944, she is married off to Shusaku Hojo and moves to the naval port city of Kure, where she works to build a life with her new in-laws. Through Suzu’s eyes — her cooking, her improvisations against wartime scarcity, her small joys and quiet losses — the film patiently renders the daily fabric of a country slipping deeper into war. As air raids intensify and the conflict draws inexorably closer to home, Suzu endures profound loss, yet holds fast to the ordinary acts of living, love, and imagination that sustain her. Directed by Sunao Katabuchi and adapted from Fumiyo Kouno’s manga, In This Corner of the World is a luminous, deeply humane, and quietly devastating work — a portrait of resilience and the preciousness of everyday life, set against the shadow of Hiroshima.

『この世界の片隅に』は、第二次世界大戦を、戦場や大きな戦略としてではなく、一人の女性の日常の、ささやかで慈しみに満ちた手ざわりを通して見つめた、高い評価を受けたアニメーション・ドラマです。浦野すずは、絵を描くことが大好きな、おっとりとした少し天然な女性。広島の海辺の町、江波に育ちました。1944年、彼女は北條周作のもとへ嫁ぎ、軍港の街・呉へと移り住み、新しい家族とともに暮らしを築いていきます。すずの目を通して——その料理、物資の乏しい戦時下での工夫、小さな喜びと、静かな喪失を通して——本作は、しだいに戦争へと深く沈み込んでいく国の、日々の暮らしの手ざわりを、丁寧に描き出します。空襲が激しさを増し、戦争が否応なく足もとへと迫るなか、すずは深い喪失を経験しながらも、彼女を支える「生きること、愛すること、想像すること」という、ありふれた営みを手放さずにいます。片渕須直が監督し、こうの史代の漫画を映画化した本作は、輝くように美しく、深く人間的で、そして静かに胸を打つ一作です。広島の影のもとで、しなやかな強さと、日常の暮らしのかけがえのなさを描き出した肖像なのです。

In This Corner of the World is based on the manga by Fumiyo Kouno, a Hiroshima native, which ran from 2007 to 2009 and won an Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival. Director Sunao Katabuchi — previously known for Mai Mai Miracle (2009) — spent years on meticulous historical research, studying documents, conducting field surveys, and interviewing survivors to reconstruct the streetscapes, daily customs, and textures of wartime Kure and Hiroshima as faithfully as possible. Facing difficulty securing funding, the production famously turned to crowdfunding, drawing thousands of supporters who helped bring the film to completion. Released in a limited number of theaters in November 2016, the film’s acclaim spread by word of mouth into a major long-running hit.
