[English] Sunao Katabuchi (b. August 10, 1960, Hirakata, Osaka) is a Japanese animation director, screenwriter, and storyboard artist, celebrated for meticulously researched, deeply humane films that find the extraordinary in ordinary lives. While studying film at Nihon University College of Art, a special lecture led to his working with Hayao Miyazaki, and he joined the animation industry in the early 1980s, contributing as a screenwriter to the TV series Sherlock Hound. At Studio Ghibli, Katabuchi was originally slated to direct Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989); when Miyazaki ultimately took the helm, Katabuchi served as assistant director — a formative early experience.

Katabuchi built his craft over the following decades across television and film, directing the World Masterpiece Theater series Famous Dog Lassie (1996) before making his feature directorial debut with the grounded fantasy Princess Arete (2001), a quietly feminist fairy tale seen through the eyes of its young heroine. He then reached a wider audience directing the stylish, ultraviolent action series Black Lagoon (2006) and its follow-ups — the work for which many overseas anime fans first knew his name.

Katabuchi’s reputation as a major film author was cemented by two intimate period dramas rooted in exhaustive historical research. Mai Mai Miracle (2009), based on Nobuko Takagi’s autobiographical story, portrays the inner lives of children in 1950s Yamaguchi, interwoven with a thousand-year-old vision of the Heian court. Its acclaim led to In This Corner of the World (2016), his adaptation of Fumiyo Kouno’s manga about a young woman’s daily life in wartime Kure and Hiroshima, which won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year and topped Kinema Junpo’s list of the best Japanese films of 2016 — the first anime to do so since My Neighbor Totoro in 1988. In 2019 he released an extended version, In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World, and that year founded his own studio, Contrail. He is currently directing a new feature, The Mourning Children (Nagiko), set in Kyoto around the time of Sei Shonagon’s The Pillow Book.

[English] In This Corner of the World (2016) brought Katabuchi his widest acclaim, winning the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, being named the best Japanese film of 2016 by Kinema Junpo, and earning honors including the Hiroshima Peace Film Award and a jury award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. His earlier Mai Mai Miracle was also recognized at international festivals. In 2018 Katabuchi was among the filmmakers invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and he continues to teach at Nihon University College of Art.
