Every year on August 8, International Cat Day asks us to think about an animal that has lived alongside humans for thousands of years, yet largely on its own terms. Cats do not perform loyalty the way dogs do; they simply choose to stay. That quiet independence is part of what we love about them—but it is also why so many go unseen. Of the roughly 600 million cats in the world, only about 220 million live as pets; the remaining 480 million or so are stray or feral, exposed to hunger, injury, and disease. This day is not only a celebration of whiskers and purrs. It is a reminder that the same independence we admire leaves millions of cats without a safe home—and that adoption, sterilization, and simple attention can change that, one cat at a time.

Origins: A Welfare Call, Handed to Specialists

International Cat Day was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), one of the world’s largest animal welfare and conservation organizations, to draw global attention to the needs of cats—domestic, stray, and feral alike. Unlike some observances, no single symbolic historical event has been officially documented as the reason for choosing August 8; the date simply became the fixed anchor for the day. In 2020, custodianship passed to the British charity International Cat Care (iCatCare), which now coordinates the observance worldwide. iCatCare is far older than the day it stewards: it traces its roots to 1958, when it began as a small organization called the Feline Advisory Bureau, and has spent decades advancing cat health through research and veterinary guidelines.

Over the years it has grown from a celebration of pampered house cats into a broader campaign—promoting adoption over purchase, spay-and-neuter programs to curb overpopulation, and vaccination drives to protect both cats and communities. August’s timing is meaningful too: in the northern hemisphere it coincides with a peak in feline reproduction, making it a fitting moment to talk about sterilization and the summer abandonment that swells shelter populations.

For 2026, the observance carries the theme “Cats for Climate,” extending the conversation beyond individual welfare toward the environment cats share with every other species. The framing invites reflection on how free-roaming cat populations intersect with ecosystems, how responsible ownership and sterilization reduce ecological pressure, and how the well-being of animals and the health of the planet are ultimately bound together. It is a notable shift in tone: from asking what we can do for cats, toward asking how cats fit into a wider web of responsibility that includes wildlife, habitats, and climate.
