It was organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise relief for the famine that struck Ethiopia between 1983 and 1985. Under Directors Guild rules, Singer received sole directing credit, while Fletcher was credited as an executive producer. For this performance he won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, and the BAFTA for Best Actor.

A vast set was built on a former RAF base, and extras were digitally duplicated to reproduce an audience of 72,000.
