[English] Rob Minkoff (Robert Ralph Minkoff, b. August 11, 1962, Palo Alto, California) is an American director, producer, and animator, best known for co-directing Disney’s The Lion King (1994) and for a versatile career spanning animation and live-action family films. He discovered a passion for animation at fifteen when he came across Christopher Finch’s The Art of Walt Disney, and went on to study character animation at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). He was hired by Walt Disney Animation Studios in the early 1980s, working as an in-between and animation artist on films including The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and The Little Mermaid.

Minkoff’s major break came in 1992, when — after developing a Roger Rabbit short — he was named co-director, alongside Roger Allers, of The Lion King (1994). The film became the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of its time and a defining classic of the Disney Renaissance, winning two Academy Awards for its music.

Leaving Disney to broaden his range, Minkoff moved into live-action and hybrid filmmaking, directing the hugely popular family films Stuart Little (1999) and Stuart Little 2 (2002), which blended live-action with CG animation. He went on to direct the Eddie Murphy comedy The Haunted Mansion (2003) — reuniting with Lion King producer Don Hahn — and the martial-arts adventure The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), which paired Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time. He returned to feature animation with DreamWorks’ Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014) and later co-directed Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (2022). He founded the production company Sprocketdyne Entertainment and has remained active across animation and live-action cinema.
