Eat, Pray, Love tells the true-life story of Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts), a successful New York writer who, on paper, has everything a modern woman is supposed to want — a husband, a home, a thriving career — yet feels hollow, restless, and lost. After a painful divorce and a rebound relationship that collapses, Liz makes a radical decision: to spend a year traveling the world alone, in search of herself. In Italy, she rediscovers the simple pleasure of eating and living without guilt; at an ashram in India, she wrestles with her own mind and learns the discipline of prayer and meditation; and finally, on the island of Bali in Indonesia, under the guidance of an old medicine man, she rediscovers balance — and, unexpectedly, love, in the form of a Brazilian expatriate named Felipe (Javier Bardem). Directed and co-written by Ryan Murphy and adapted from Elizabeth Gilbert’s phenomenally bestselling memoir, the film is a lush, sensuous travelogue and a heartfelt meditation on self-discovery, healing, and the courage it takes to start over.

The film is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2006 memoir Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia, a global publishing phenomenon that had sold millions of copies worldwide. It was directed and co-written by Ryan Murphy, best known as the creator of television series such as Nip/Tuck and Glee. The production filmed on location in the three countries at the heart of Gilbert’s journey — Italy, India, and Indonesia (Bali) — as well as in New York, lending the film its distinctive travelogue texture.
