Introduction

A Modern Self-Discovery Drama in Which a Woman Carrying Life’s Confusion Travels Three Countries and Finds a Self-Care That Is Her Own

July 24 is International Self-Care Day.

This observance was established in 2011 by the International Self-Care Foundation (ISF), a UK-based nonprofit organization, and the date of July 24 (7/24) carries the meaning that “self-care is something to be practiced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout one’s life.” Its aim is a global recognition of the importance of individuals managing their own health and happiness, preventing illness, and maintaining the balance of mind and body; the World Health Organization (WHO) too positions June 24 to July 24 as “Self-Care Month,” keeping pace with this day. In Japan, the Japan Self-Medication Industry designates the same day as “Self-Medication Day,” and holds various activities to promote awareness of managing one’s own health during the week that includes this day, designated “Self-Medication Week.”

For this special day, we strongly recommend Ryan Murphy’s 2010 film Eat, Pray, Love. A film adaptation of the bestselling memoir based on the real experience of author Elizabeth Gilbert, it is the story of a woman who, feeling lost about the direction of her life, recovers her physical and mental health through a year-long journey visiting, in turn, three countries: Italy, India, and Indonesia.

The journey of the protagonist Liz, played by Julia Roberts, depicts the ultimate practice of self-care for problems that many people in modern society face — the confusion of life, mental exhaustion, and loss of self. Through three stages — the recovery of the body through food, spiritual healing through meditation and prayer, and the renewal of the heart through a new love — the process by which the protagonist recovers health and happiness in the truest sense makes for a remarkable work that depicts the essential value of self-care and its diverse approaches.

Background Knowledge

The Background of the Original Work and Its Basis in a True Story

Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir Eat, Pray, Love, the basis of this film, was published in 2006 and became a worldwide bestseller, translated into more than 30 languages. Gilbert was a professional writer who proposed the book project to a publisher and covered her travel expenses by receiving an advance, and so the journey also had the aspect of being part of her work as a writer.

This bestseller became a huge hit that continued to rank on the New York Times bestseller list for a long period. Gilbert herself is a nonfiction writer known for works such as The Last American Man, and this work too, through her excellent writing ability and deep insight, was completed as a profound philosophy of life that goes beyond a mere travelogue.

The Actual Background of the Choice of Three Destinations

Though depicted concisely in the film, Gilbert’s choice of destinations had concrete reasons. Italy was chosen as a culture that values pleasure and beauty, the polar opposite of American diligence. As for India, the destination was the ashram of a teacher to whom she had been devoted even before her divorce. Bali was a following of the connection she had made with the medicine man Ketut Liyer, whom she had met years earlier while reporting for a magazine article.

In the film, to avoid religious proper nouns, the training in India in particular is depicted as a “general spiritual quest,” but in reality it was a choice based on personal devotion to a specific teacher. Regarding the ashram and guru that formed the background of the original work, Gilbert herself has not revealed the names, though reports speculated about who the particular figure might be.

What Makes It Exceptional

Julia Roberts’s Life-Sized Performance

The film’s greatest strength is Julia Roberts’s natural, life-sized performance. Making use of her rich life experience, she expresses with a performance of depth the complex state of mind of a woman entering her forties and the psychology of a modern woman carrying the confusion of life.

Especially striking is the depiction of the change of emotion, from the scene where she prays to God for the first time, alone in a room, and breaks down weeping, to the scene where she recovers a genuine smile in Italy. Restraining her glamorous star quality, she splendidly plays a character who holds together the weakness and strength of a real woman, making for an appealing performance with which many female viewers can identify.

The Beautiful Visual Expression of the Cultural Appeal of Three Countries

The visual expression that captures the cultural character and beauty of each country is another great strength of the work. The appeal of the cobblestones and fine food of Italy’s ancient cities, the strict and sacred atmosphere of the ashram in India, and the lush nature and warm expressions of the people of Bali are each beautifully depicted with different cinematographic techniques. The cinematographer is the master Robert Richardson, known for JFK and The Aviator.

Rather than a mere travel film, by visually expressing the philosophy of life and values that each culture holds, it allows viewers, too, to gain the experience of learning from other cultures together with Liz. The delicious-looking depiction of the eating scenes, the serene beauty of the meditation scenes, and the appealing spectacle of the Bali sunset all serve to effectively convey the film’s important message.

The Cleverness of a Structure That Depicts the Many Sides of Self-Care

That it systematically depicts the many sides of self-care through the three-stage structure of “eat, pray, love” is also highly praised. By depicting the different approaches of physical recovery, spiritual growth, and emotional healing in stages, viewers can understand the importance of comprehensive self-care.

That there are different challenges and growth at each stage, and that the importance of a continuous effort taking time — rather than a simple solution — is emphasized, also holds a realistic and practical value.
