Introduction

A Story of German Reunification, Woven by a Beautiful Lie to Protect a Loved One

August 13 is the day in 1961 when construction of the Berlin Wall began. Through this construction, which the East German government began overnight, Berlin was physically divided, and families, friends, and lovers were suddenly torn apart. This “Wall of Shame,” 3.6 meters high and stretching about 155 kilometers, went on shaping the lives of Berlin’s citizens for 28 years as a symbol of the Cold War.

But on November 9, 1989, a historic moment arrived. The fall of the Berlin Wall — it was not merely the removal of a physical barrier but also the beginning of a reality in which people who had lived under different ideologies suddenly had to live in one world. Changes in political systems happen in an instant, but removing the “wall” in people’s hearts is a far more complex and time-consuming process.

Good Bye, Lenin!, released in 2003 (directed by Wolfgang Becker), is a heartwarming story in which, amid this dramatic social change, one young man strives to protect his beloved family. Alex, a young man born and raised in East Germany, faces an unexpectedly difficult situation amid the turbulent times and is forced into a grave decision for his family’s sake.

By watching, on August 13 — the day the Berlin Wall’s construction began — the story of a family that lived through the turbulent era from division to reunification, we can turn our thoughts to the depth of the human drama behind political change, the difficulty of adapting to change, and the universal wish to protect a loved one. This film is a masterpiece that depicts, with a warm yet poignant perspective, how each individual lives and what choices they make at a great turning point of history.

Background Knowledge

The Background of the Film’s Production

For director Wolfgang Becker, the making of Good Bye, Lenin! began in the summer of 1999, but for screenwriter Bernd Lichtenberg its conception had begun about ten years earlier.

The screenplay’s long road: Lichtenberg experienced the reunification period in West Berlin at about the same age as the protagonist Alex, and sublimated that experience into the story. But at first he felt “the time was not yet ripe,” and put the screenplay “away in a drawer,” letting it rest for several years. The turning point was when he watched Becker’s Life Is All You Get. In its style, where sadness and comedy are exquisitely mixed, he found a commonality with the film he was conceiving, and became convinced that “this is the person who can realize my idea.”

The difficult writing of the screenplay: Producer Stefan Arndt recalls that “suddenly energy welled up.” The moment he read the five-page outline, he says, “I was convinced I could tell everything I wanted to convey.” But the road to completion was not smooth. It was only after six drafts plus several intermediate versions that the screenplay was finally completed.

The importance of character development: Becker and Lichtenberg insisted on “telling the story through characters,” and argued fiercely, in particular, over character settings. The one that received the most substantial change was the character Denis; initially set as a fat boy of Turkish origin forced into an arranged marriage, he was finally changed into an amateur filmmaker combining bold imagination with practicality.

The History of the Berlin Wall and the Division of East and West Germany

To understand the film deeply, it is important to know the historical background from the Berlin Wall’s construction to its fall.

The construction of the Berlin Wall (August 13, 1961): After the Second World War, Germany was divided and governed by the victorious Allies (the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union). The capital, Berlin, too, was divided into east and west — East Berlin, managed by the Soviet Union, and the three districts of West Berlin, each managed by one of the three Western nations. At first each of the four nations governed independently, but as the Cold War advanced the three Western nations came to cooperate, carried out a currency union in 1948, and in effect integrated as West Berlin. In time, in 1949, the Western districts became independent as the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the Soviet district as the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), but the ideological confrontation of East and West intensified. Because about 2.7 million East German citizens had fled to the West by 1961, the East German government, to prevent the population outflow, began construction of a wall dividing Berlin overnight.

The wall’s structure and effect: The Berlin Wall was not merely a wall but a complex boundary system equipped with barbed wire, watchtowers, minefields, and automatic gun emplacements. Through this wall families were torn apart; about 5,000 people attempted to escape, and at least 140 of them lost their lives.

The East German socialist system: The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) adopted a Soviet-type socialist system. On the foundation of Marxism-Leninism, theorized by Lenin and put into practice by Stalin, citizens’ lives were managed by the state under state-owned enterprises, a planned economy, and a one-party dictatorship. Education, medical care, and employment were guaranteed, but freedom of speech and freedom of movement were greatly restricted. Among the socialist countries of the Soviet sphere that arose after the Second World War, East Germany was regarded as an important testing ground second only to the Soviet Union, and also bore the role of a showcase demonstrating “the superiority of socialism” to the West.

The upheaval of 1989: Under the influence of the Soviet Union’s perestroika (reform), a wave of democratization arose in the Eastern European countries. In East Germany too, peaceful protest activity by citizens expanded, and on November 9, 1989, the government announced an easing of travel restrictions; but through confusion in the reporting, citizens rushed to the Berlin Wall, and it became, in effect, the fall of the wall.

What Makes It Exceptional

Daniel Brühl’s Delicate Performance

Daniel Brühl (born 1978) splendidly played through the complex state of mind of a young man who goes on lying for the sake of his beloved mother. Through this role he became a rising star of the German film world, and later came to be active in Hollywood films as well.

The balance of comedy and drama: This film exquisitely mixes comedic elements and serious drama, and Brühl naturally plays both. He plays without discomfort the desperation in the scenes of making fake TV news and the gravity when facing his mother’s illness.

Director Wolfgang Becker’s Directorial Skill

Director Becker, while handling a heavy theme, made a work the audience can enjoy to the end.

The fusion of history and personal story: Because it always focuses on individual emotions and human relationships against the backdrop of great historical change, the audience can empathize with it as the story of one family rather than feeling as though they are studying history.

The balance of humor and gravity: While handling the heavy theme of East-West reunification, by weaving in humor throughout, it draws the audience into the story without their feeling stifled. The fake TV news production scenes in particular are excellent direction that makes one think even while laughing.
