Ad Astra is a contemplative, visually magnificent science-fiction drama that turns a journey across the solar system into a profound exploration of fatherhood, solitude, and the human need for connection. In the near future, astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is a supremely composed, emotionally guarded man, renowned for a pulse that never rises even in the face of danger. He is the son of the legendary Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), a pioneering astronaut who vanished decades ago on the “Lima Project,” a mission to the edge of the solar system in search of extraterrestrial intelligence. When mysterious power surges threatening all life on Earth are traced back to Clifford’s last known location near Neptune, Roy is sent on a secret, top-priority journey across the planets — from the Moon to Mars and beyond — to make contact with the father he believed dead, and to stop whatever he has become. As he travels deeper into the void and into his own past, Roy is forced to confront his buried grief, his inherited emotional isolation, and the question of what — and who — truly matters. Directed by James Gray, drawing on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and anchored by a restrained, interior performance from Brad Pitt, Ad Astra is a strikingly beautiful and deeply melancholy odyssey about a son searching, across the vastness of space, for his father and himself.

Ad Astra was a long-cherished project for director James Gray, who announced it at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival with the stated ambition of creating “the most realistic depiction of space travel” ever put on film. Gray drew openly on Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness — the same source that inspired Apocalypse Now — reframing its journey upriver toward an enigmatic, isolated figure as a voyage across the solar system toward a lost father. Brad Pitt, who also produced the film through his company Plan B Entertainment, delivers one of his most understated performances, much of it carried by internal monologue. The production sought scientific plausibility while taking dramatic license, and the film’s imagined near-future solar system — with a commercialized Moon and established Mars outposts — was praised for its detailed design.
