[English] Sir Christopher Lee (Christopher Frank Carandini Lee, May 27, 1922 – June 7, 2015) was an English actor and singer, one of the most prolific, distinctive, and enduring performers in the history of cinema, celebrated for his imposing height, aristocratic bearing, and deep, commanding voice. Born in London to an English army officer and an Italian contessa — and a step-nephew of James Bond creator Ian Fleming — he served in the Royal Air Force and in intelligence during the Second World War before beginning his screen career, making his film debut in Corridor of Mirrors (1948).

Lee’s breakthrough came through Hammer Film Productions, the British studio that revitalized gothic horror. He played the creature in The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and then, most famously, the title role in Dracula (1958) — a part he would return to again and again, becoming the definitive screen Dracula for a generation. Over the following years he became the face of Hammer horror, while chafing against the typecasting and steadily broadening his range: he played the sinister pagan Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man (1973) — which he considered his finest film — the assassin Scaramanga in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and figures as varied as Sherlock Holmes and, in a role he called his most important, Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Jinnah (1998).

At the turn of the millennium, in his late seventies and eighties, Lee enjoyed one of the most remarkable late-career revivals in film history, introducing him to vast new audiences. He played the wizard Saruman in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–2003) and The Hobbit trilogy (2012–2014), and the villainous Count Dooku in the Star Wars prequels Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). He became a favorite of director Tim Burton, appearing in Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows, and worked with Martin Scorsese on Hugo (2011). With some 250 or more films to his name across nearly seventy years, Lee remained astonishingly active into his nineties, even releasing symphonic heavy-metal albums in his final years.
