April 16 is World Voice Day.
This observance began in 1999 in Brazil as “Brazilian National Voice Day,” initiated by a joint effort among doctors, speech-language pathologists, and singing teachers. It spread to Argentina, Portugal, and then globally — recognized as World Voice Day by the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery in 2002. Today, more than 600 events are held annually across over 50 countries.
The message at its core is simple: the voice is the most familiar tool we have, and the one we most take for granted until it is gone. It makes speech possible, makes singing possible, carries anger and laughter and grief into the world. Every person has a voice. And every voice belongs only to that person.
For this day, the film to watch is Gareth Jennings’s 2016 animated film Sing, from Illumination Entertainment.
The story follows Buster Moon, a koala with a failing theater and a talent for optimism, who launches a singing competition that draws six contestants — each carrying their own private reasons for needing to perform. Over 60 pop songs are woven into the film, not as background music but as the language through which the characters reveal who they are. The film is about many things: failure, parenthood, identity, perseverance. But at its center is the question World Voice Day assingks — what does it cost to let your voice be heard?
The film grossed $634 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. The original song “Faith” by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. A sequel, Sing 2, was released in 2021.

Background Knowledge
Gareth Jennings and the Origins of the Film
Director and screenwriter Gareth Jennings is British, known for live-action features including The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) and Son of Rambow (2007). Sing was his animated feature debut.
Illumination’s founder and CEO Chris Meledandri — who had typically worked with directors from animation backgrounds — was drawn to Jennings after seeing Son of Rambow, responding to its delicacy. Equally decisive was Jennings’s background in music video direction, which gave him a deep understanding of how music and image work together. When Meledandri visited Jennings in England and pitched the idea of a singing competition populated entirely by animals, Jennings was immediately interested. A key reference for the structure of multiple characters pursuing a dream through music was The Commitments.
The film’s unnamed city was designed by production and character designer Eric Guillon with the goal of being simultaneously beautiful and immediately inhabitable — a blend of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Miami in its color palette. The decision to have virtually all music in the film performed diegetically — actually sung by characters within the story — was a foundational commitment of the production.
Directors Edgar Wright (as a goat) and Wes Anderson (as a giraffe singing “Ben”) appear as voice actors in the film, an extension of a running tradition among the three friends of appearing in each other’s work.
Character Design
The animals in Sing are designed as satirical versions of recognizable human types — the goal was for audiences to see someone they know in each character. Rosita was modeled on Jennings’s wife, a fashion designer, and he filmed family dinners at home for reference. Mike was conceived as “a character with genuine talent and a genuinely unpleasant personality” — the production team fully expected audiences to dislike him, and left him unchanged. Meena was made an elephant because Jennings felt that a character with stage fright should inhabit the largest possible body.
The Voice Cast
The cast assembles a striking range of Hollywood talent. Matthew McConaughey, an Academy Award winner, voiced Buster Moon — the casting of an Oscar-winning actor as a koala was itself a statement of intent. Scarlett Johansson (Ash), Reese Witherspoon (Rosita), and Seth MacFarlane (Mike) each performed their own singing. Taron Egerton (Johnny), known for the Kingsman series, revealed a singing voice that drew significant praise.
Meena was voiced by Tori Kelly, a singer-songwriter who rose to prominence through YouTube. The casting was exact: Kelly’s voice is genuinely extraordinary, which makes the gap between Meena’s ability and her paralysis land with particular force — and makes the moment she finally sings all the more powerful.
Illumination Entertainment
Illumination — the studio behind the Despicable Me and Minions franchises — operates in a distinct register from Pixar or DreamWorks, prioritizing character comedy, music, and accessible entertainment over large-scale thematic ambition. Sing and The Secret Life of Pets were released in the same year, the first time Illumination had put out two features in a single year, and both became global hits. Animation was produced at Illumination Mac Guff in France.
What Makes It Exceptional
The Many Meanings of “Having a Voice”
The six contestants each carry a different version of the same problem.
Meena has an extraordinary voice and cannot use it — fear seals it inside her. Ash has her own musical voice and cannot get anyone to take it seriously. Johnny knows what he wants but cannot bring himself to say it to his father. Rosita has spent years in which the part of herself that wanted to sing had no room to exist at all.
Singing, for each of them, means something beyond music. It means proving that they exist on their own terms. The film’s connection to World Voice Day runs deeper than the literal — it asks what it costs each person to make themselves heard.
Six Stories Running Simultaneously
The film holds Buster’s story at its center while running six parallel character arcs. Rosita pulled between motherhood and the self she set aside. Johnny caught between family loyalty and individual identity. Ash moving from loss toward creation. Each character’s situation is drawn simply enough that any viewer can find a way in — the film is constructed so that everyone has somewhere to land.
Buster Moon, the Enthusiastic Optimist
Buster is not an honest man — he lies about the prize money, oversells to potential backers, and proves serially incapable of learning from failure. But he is entirely sincere in the one thing that matters: he wants something to happen in that theater. He wants the people he has assembled to be given a moment.
What keeps him from becoming a villain is that his desire is not purely self-serving. His methods are chaotic but his attention is genuine. That combination — flawed means, real care — is what allows the audience to stay with him.
Songs as Character Language
The film’s 60-plus songs are not soundtrack — they are speech. Ash’s post-breakup original composition carries her anger and grief directly. Johnny’s choice of “I’m Still Standing” reflects his relationship with his father without a word of explanation. Rosita and Gunter’s “Shake It Off” is the physical release of years of suppression.
The selection and delivery of each song reveals more about the characters than their dialogue does.

ガース・ジェニングスと企画の誕生
監督・脚本のガース・ジェニングスはイギリス人で、「サン・オブ・ランボーズ」（2007年）や「銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド」（2005年）で知られるライブアクション出身の監督です。本作はアニメーション長編監督デビュー作となりました。
イルミネーションの創設者兼CEOであるクリス・メレダンドリは、これまで主に短編アニメーション出身の監督と組むことが多かったため、実写映画を多く手がけてきたジェニングスとのタッグは本作が初めてとなりました。メレダンドリはジェニングスが監督した映画『リトル・ランボーズ』に惚れ込み、その繊細な感性に着目。さらにジェニングスがミュージックビデオの制作経験を通じて培った「映像における音楽の力」への深い理解が、本作の企画にとって決定的な意味を持ちました。

キャラクターの設計

バスターという「熱狂的な楽観主義者」
主人公バスター・ムーンは、正直者ではありません——賞金の嘘をつき、ナナに誇張した売り込みをし、失敗続きでも懲りない。しかし彼は「この人たちを輝かせたい」という一点においては純粋です。
バスターが悪役にならず、観客が彼を応援し続けられるのは、彼の欲が「自分のため」だけでなく「この劇場で何かが生まれてほしい」という祈りを含んでいるからです。彼のやり方は雑ですが、眼差しは本物——この整合性が、映画を気持ちよく観続けさせます。
