What Terror Takes, and the Dignity That Remains Even When Taken
August 21 is the “International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism,” established by the United Nations in 2017. This day was set up with the aim of mourning those whose lives were taken by terrorism, standing with the victims and bereaved families who go on living despite being wounded and having lost loved ones, and protecting their human rights and dignity. The shock of terror is reported only immediately after an incident; the existence of victims and bereaved families who continue for long years thereafter to face their pain tends to be forgotten with time. This day calls for mourning the lives lost and, at the same time, quietly turning our eyes to the subsequent lives of those left behind.
As a film to watch on this day, we recommend Peter Berg’s 2016 film Patriots Day. This work is a docudrama depicting the “Boston Marathon bombing,” which actually occurred in the United States on April 15, 2013, and the subsequent investigation pursuing the perpetrators. Two bombs exploded at the marathon’s finish line, three lives were taken, and more than 260 people were injured.
What this work gazes at is not the shock of the incident alone. The victims whose daily lives were suddenly torn apart. People who try to live even while losing their legs. Background Knowledge
The Boston Marathon Bombing
What this work depicts is the “Boston Marathon bombing,” which actually occurred on April 15, 2013. At the finish line of the Boston Marathon — one of the most historic marathon events in the United States — bustling with a large crowd of spectators, two bombs exploded. In this incident, three people died and more than 260 were injured, many of them severely, losing arms and legs.
Those who carried out the act were brothers, immigrants of Chechen background. After the incident, at the end of a large-scale search spanning four days, the elder brother died in a gunfight with police officers, and the younger brother was taken into custody. It is also known that in the course of investigating this incident, an exceptional measure for a major American city was taken, with Boston and its surrounding area temporarily locked down.
Incidentally, “Patriots’ Day,” which also became the film’s title, is the name of a holiday in Massachusetts and elsewhere commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord of the American Revolutionary War. The Boston Marathon is held every year on this holiday, and it was on this very day that the incident occurred. A holiday that should be the city’s pride became a day of tragedy.
The Question of How to Depict a True Story
This work is one that made a film of a tragedy that had actually just occurred, at a comparatively early time. For this reason, before and after its release it also drew debate — that “making a film of a true story as entertainment is too soon,” and that “it lacks consideration for the victims.”
In response to such voices, director Peter Berg and lead actor Mark Wahlberg are said to have paid the closest attention to making it a work imbued with respect for the victims and for the people who confronted the incident, rather than consuming the incident as sensationalist action. The stance of trying to be faithful to the facts, accumulating careful interviews with real victims and involved parties, can be glimpsed throughout this work. That they placed footage of testimony from real survivors at the end of the main feature, not waiting for the end credits, was also to impress strongly upon the audience that this is, to the end, an event that really occurred, and the story of real people.
The Choice That the Protagonist “Does Not Exist”
The protagonist, Sergeant Tommy Saunders, is in fact not a real person. He is a fictional character, a composite into one person of multiple real police officers involved in the incident.
This is a bold choice for a docudrama. If a specific real officer is made the protagonist, discrepancies with fact over the depiction of that person and consideration for involved parties could become problems. So the production team dared to place a fictional single officer as the narrator-figure, taking a structure that follows the whole picture of the incident through his eyes. Saunders is present at the scene of the explosion, at the investigation headquarters, and at the scene of the gunfight. That one person is present at so many scenes is unnatural in reality, but by this device the audience comes to be able to relive the whole of the incident from a single viewpoint.
What Makes It Exceptional
An Ensemble Drama Depicting Many People, Not a Single Hero
The most excellent point of this work is that it depicts the enormous tragedy of terrorism not as the exploits of a single hero, but as the story of many ordinary people.
The fictional protagonist Saunders is a narrator-figure for following the story, but he alone does not solve everything. The investigators analyzing surveillance-camera footage, the exchange student who achieves a desperate escape, the local police officers who trade fire with the perpetrators, the medical staff who treat the injured with all their might, and the ordinary citizens who bring in information. Only when the courage and devotion of countless people accumulate does the incident first head toward resolution. The viewpoint that those who confront terror are not special heroes but each ordinary human being who happened to be present makes this work one with depth, different from a mere action film.
The Stance of Trying to Be Faithful to Fact
This work, without flowing into entertaining embellishment, tries to reproduce the course of the actual incident as faithfully as possible.
The steady process of investigation identifying the perpetrators from surveillance-camera footage, the tense gunfight, the lockdown of the whole city, and such events are painstakingly depicted. Without relying on excessively sensational direction or needlessly gruesome depiction, it produces a sense of tension through the weight of the facts themselves. And the footage of testimony from real survivors placed at the end of the main feature engraves deeply in the audience’s heart the fact that this is not fiction but an event that really occurred. This sincere stance gives this work a weight akin also to a documentary.
The Quietly Resonating Music of Reznor and Ross
The ones who handled this work’s music are Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Their music, without flashily inflaming emotion, quietly supports the tension of the incident and the sadness flowing at its depths.
The uneasy resonance produced by restrained electronic sound heightens the tension of an incident where one does not know when or what will happen, and at the same time functions also as a quiet elegy for the lost lives. That music, which does not flow too far into sentiment, supports this work’s restrained tone from the side of sound.

ボストンマラソン爆弾テロ事件
本作が描くのは、2013年4月15日に実際に起きた「ボストンマラソン爆弾テロ事件」です。アメリカで最も歴史あるマラソン大会の一つであるボストンマラソンの、大勢の観客で賑わうゴール地点で、二つの爆弾が爆発しました。この事件で3人が亡くなり、260人以上が負傷、そのうち多くの人が手足を失う重傷を負いました。
犯行に及んだのは、チェチェン系の移民である兄弟でした。事件後、四日間にわたる大規模な捜索の末、兄は警官との銃撃戦で死亡し、弟は身柄を確保されました。この事件の捜査の過程で、ボストンとその周辺地域が一時的に封鎖されるという、アメリカの大都市では異例の事態がとられたことでも知られています。

実話をどう描くかという問い
本作は、実際に起きたばかりの悲劇を、比較的早い時期に映画化した作品です。そのため公開前後には、「実話を娯楽として描くのは早すぎるのではないか」「被害者への配慮を欠くのではないか」という議論も呼びました。
こうした声に対し、監督のピーター・バーグと主演のマーク・ウォールバーグは、事件を興味本位のアクションとして消費するのではなく、被害者と、事件に立ち向かった人々への敬意を込めた作品にすることに、細心の注意を払ったとされます。実在の被害者や関係者への丁寧な取材を重ね、事実に忠実であろうとした姿勢が、本作の随所にうかがえます。エンドロールを待たず本編の最後に、実在の生存者たちの証言映像を置いたのも、これがあくまで現実に起きた出来事であり、実在の人々の物語であることを、観客に強く印象づけるためでした。
主人公は「実在しない」という選択
主人公のトミー・サンダース巡査部長は、実は、実在の人物ではありません。事件に関わった複数の実在の警官たちを一人に合成した、架空のキャラクターです。
これは、実録映画としては、思い切った選択です。特定の実在の警官を主人公にすると、その人物の描写をめぐって事実との齟齬や関係者への配慮が問題になりかねません。そこで制作陣は、あえて架空の一人の警官を狂言回しとして置き、彼の目を通して事件の全体像を追う構成をとりました。サンダースは、爆発現場にも、捜査本部にも、銃撃戦の現場にも居合わせます。一人の人物がこれほど多くの現場に立ち会うのは現実には不自然ですが、この工夫によって、観客は事件の全体を一つの視点から追体験できるようになっています。
優れている点
一人の英雄ではなく、大勢の人々を描く群像劇
本作の最も優れた点は、テロという巨大な悲劇を、たった一人のヒーローの活躍としてではなく、大勢の普通の人々の物語として描いていることです。
架空の主人公サンダースは、物語を追うための狂言回しではありますが、彼一人がすべてを解決するわけではありません。防犯カメラの映像を解析する捜査員、決死の脱出を遂げる留学生、犯人と撃ち合う地元の警官、負傷者を懸命に治療する医療スタッフ、そして情報を寄せる一般市民。無数の人々の勇気と献身が積み重なって、初めて事件は解決へと向かいます。テロに立ち向かうのは、特別な英雄ではなく、その場に居合わせた一人ひとりの普通の人間なのだという視点が、本作を、単なるアクション映画とは異なる、深みのある作品にしています。
事実に忠実であろうとする姿勢
本作は、娯楽的な脚色に流されず、実際の事件の経過を、できるかぎり忠実に再現しようとしています。
防犯カメラの映像から犯人を特定していく地道な捜査の過程、緊迫した銃撃戦、街全体の封鎖といった出来事が、丹念に描かれます。過度に扇情的な演出や、必要以上に凄惨な描写に頼ることなく、事実の重みそのもので緊張感を生み出しています。そして本編の最後に置かれた実在の生存者たちの証言映像は、これがフィクションではなく、現実に起きた出来事なのだという事実を、観客の胸に深く刻みつけます。この誠実な姿勢が、本作に、記録映画にも通じる重みを与えています。
静かに響く、レズナーとロスの音楽
本作の音楽を手がけたのは、トレント・レズナーとアティカス・ロスです。彼らの音楽は、派手に感情を煽ることなく、事件の緊張と、その底に流れる悲しみを、静かに支えています。
抑制された電子音が生み出す不穏な響きは、いつ何が起こるか分からない事件の緊迫感を高めると同時に、失われた命への、静かな哀悼の調べとしても機能します。感傷に流れすぎないその音楽が、本作の抑制の効いたトーンを、音の面から支えています。
